When Do I Need to Swap Out My Car’s Air Filter for a New One?

Your car, truck, crossover, SUV, or van will give you signs that the air filter is clogged. You will notice acceleration and engine performance issues, you may not be able to get your car started, you will see a reduction in your gas mileage, and your check engine light might even come on. Righter’s Auto Repair talks about when to change the air filter below, but we aren’t going to stop there. We will also let you know when the other major filters in your automobile need to be changed.

Air Filter

The air filter in the engine is responsible for purifying the air before it is burned in the combustion chamber. This filter needs to be changed at least once a year. If you drive 12,000 miles before the year is up, then have the filter changed then. You can look at your air filter yourself to see if it is dirty. Simply locate it in your engine using your owner’s manual, unscrew the cover, and check the air filter.

Cabin Filter

Your automobile may also be equipped with a cabin filter. This filter is responsible for purifying the air that blows into the passenger cabin. Usually, this filter is found behind the dashboard. Check your owner’s manual to see if your vehicle has one. If it does, this filter needs to be changed every 30,000 miles. If you feel sick when you drive your automobile, your cabin filter is dirty.

Fuel Filter

The fuel filter is responsible for purifying the fuel before it is burned in the combustion chamber just like the air filter is responsible for purifying the air. Fuel is filled with contaminants and sediment, even if you buy the most expensive kind. The fuel filter purifies the fuel before it runs through the fuel pump and after it exits the fuel pump. This ensures the fuel in your engine is always as clean as possible. Change the fuel filter every 30,000 miles.

Oil Filter

The oil filter is changed every 3,000 miles if that’s when you get an oil and filter change. If you use synthetic motor oil, it is changed every 5,000 or 7,500 miles. The oil filter purifies the oil after it has run through the engine to make sure that it is clean once it recirculates through the engine. This protects your engine and prevents sludge from building up on the moving parts.
