What Is the Engine Control Module?

The engine control module is the main computer chip in your SUV, car, or truck. This module communicates with system sensors to make certain that everything is just fine while you are driving the automobile. This chip also handles tasks such as firing the spark plugs in the combustion chamber. If the engine control module malfunctions, your engine will turn off and you won’t be able to start it again.

The Chip’s Function

This is because today’s automobiles cannot run without their engine control modules. As we mentioned above, the module not only monitors system sensors but also handles some of the operations required for your vehicle to start and run. This chip is incredibly important to your vehicle, and, hopefully, you will never need to replace it. It is rare for this chip to go bad.

The System Sensors

Let’s talk about the system sensors now. Your automobile has a ton of sensors located throughout it to monitor all of its activities. These sensors know when everything is okay, and they know when there are problems. These sensors communicate with the engine control module while your vehicle is running. If something goes wrong with the automobile, the sensors will tell the module that there is a problem.

Dashboard Warnings

Another thing that the module does is resolve issues. For example, if a system sensor tells the module that there is too much air in the combustion chamber, it will add fuel to the chamber to balance the mixture out. If the module cannot resolve the problem, such as replace a faulty catalytic converter, it will turn on a warning light on the dashboard to let you know that your car needs to be serviced or repaired. This warning system helps you ensure your automobile does not get damaged.

Diagnostic Tests

For example, if the check engine light turns on while you are driving your vehicle, you know to head straight to our shop so we can run a diagnostic test. When we get the test results, which doesn’t take any time at all, we will see what the system sensors told the engine control module. This information tells us how to repair your car. For example, if the check engine light turned on because the catalytic converter was faulty, we will replace the catalytic converter.

As you can see, the engine control module plays an important role in your automobile. Call us today to set up a service visit if it has turned on any of your dashboard warning lights.
