Your automobile benefits from all preventative maintenance, including tire and wheel services. Keeping your tires and wheels in excellent shape helps you control your automobile easier and keeps you safe when you are on the road, especially during inclement weather. Righter’s Auto Repair advises that there are a couple of things you can do to make sure your tires are a-okay. We can help with the rest of the services required by your vehicle’s manufacturer for the tires and wheels.
Tire Air Pressure Check
You can check your tires’ air pressure regularly to make sure that all tires are inflated properly. There is a recommended pounds-per-square-inch or psi on the inside of the driver’s door. All four tires and the spare should be inflated to this psi reading. If any of your tires are lower than the recommendation, it’s important to add air to those tires to inflate them to the proper psi.
Tire Inspection
It’s also a good idea to inspect your tires regularly. Look at them closely in good light to see if you notice any damage. Examples of damage include nails or screws that you have picked up, cracks on the sidewalls, uneven tread wear, or bubbling. These are all indications that there is something wrong with the tires or the wheels. For example, misaligned wheels can wear down the tread unevenly.
Tire Rotation
One thing that helps prevent uneven tire tread wear is regular tire rotations. Generally, tire rotations are recommended every 6,000 to 10,000 miles. Some manufacturers also recommend that you rotate the tires every six months if you haven’t reached the mileage duration. Rotating the tires changes the pressure points on each tire. If you fail to change the pressure points, the tread will wear down unevenly.
Wheel Balance
Your wheels also need to be balanced regularly. It’s easy to remember this service if you have it done when you get the tires rotated. If your wheels are out of balance, their weight is not even across your vehicle’s axles. When this happens, your vehicle will shake and vibrate. Speed increases make the vibration more noticeable.
Wheel Alignment
Finally, the wheels also need to be aligned to ensure that your vehicle goes straight unless you turn it otherwise. Wheel alignments are an infrequent service. In other words, they don’t need to be done until you have driven your automobile for two years unless you’ve knocked the wheels out of alignment.
