You can count on Righter’s Auto Repair to keep your automobile in tiptop shape. Our goal is to ensure that all of our customers’ vehicles are safe and reliable. Summer is here and you rely on your car’s air conditioner to keep you cool and comfortable when you are on the road. The following things can make the air conditioning system malfunction and leave you sweating behind the wheel.
Compressor
The compressor likes to work a lot, so it doesn’t enjoy its winter vacation. In fact, not being run throughout the winter can cause the compressor to malfunction when you first use your air conditioner in the summer. A malfunctioning compressor cannot convert the refrigerant gas into liquid and circulate it through the system. This will leave you with hot air blowing through the vents.
Condenser
The condenser can get damaged by road debris. It is located directly behind the grille so it can utilize the air that flows through it in order to keep the refrigerant cold. The condenser also uses a fan for this task. If the condenser gets damaged or clogged by the dirt and debris that makes its way through the grille, it may be unable to cool off the refrigerant once it is too hot.
Condenser Fan
If the condenser fan is malfunctioning, this, too, will leave you with hot refrigerant circulating through the air conditioning system and hot air blowing through the vents. The condenser fan can be damaged by road debris just as the condenser can. It can also have an electrical problem that will prevent it from working. Without the condenser fan, the coolant cannot be cooled properly.
Electrical System
As we just mentioned, the electrical system may cause the condenser fan not to work. In addition, a problem with the electrical system may cause your air conditioner not to work. One problem that we fix all the time is the air conditioner switch. This is the button you push to turn on the air conditioner. Even a blown fuse can prevent the air conditioner from functioning.
Refrigerant
Finally, the refrigerant level can get too low if it has been years since you have had your air conditioner serviced. The refrigerant level is reduced by evaporation as well as system leaks. It’s important to have your AC serviced annually to make sure there is plenty of refrigerant in the system.
