How Does the Motor Oil Protect the Engine?

It’s true that the motor oil is the lifeblood of your engine. Without motor oil, an engine can become irreparably damaged after 30 minutes of operation. This is how important motor oil is to the engine. You may wonder how the oil protects the engine, and we are going to discuss the three things it does below. The important thing to keep in mind is that you need clean and viscous oil in the engine in order for it to do its job. If you are overdue for an oil change, the motor oil is most likely dirty and has lost its viscosity.

Lubricates

If the oil is dirty and no longer viscous, it will have problems lubricating the engine. When you think about engine lubrication, think about the sound of metal parts grinding against each other. This is the sound the engine will make if it does not have enough motor oil circulating through it. The engine needs this oil to lubricate the parts so they do not grind against each other. This reduces their ability to create friction, which can also cause problems in the engine because friction generates heat.

Reduces Heat

In fact, clean and viscous motor oil helps to reduce the heat your engine produces while it is running. You always want the engine to operate under 220 degrees Fahrenheit. The coolant in the cooling system draws heat away from the engine when it circulates through it. The motor oil does the same thing. As such, the two work together to make sure your engine does not overheat. If you are overdue for an oil change, you may notice that your engine is running a little bit hotter than it normally does.

Keeps it Clean

Another thing that the oil does to protect the engine is to keep it clean. As the oil circulates through the engine, it removes dirt and sludge that builds up inside the engine. This keeps the engine clean and operating efficiently. In fact, you may not know this but regular oil changes can help your fuel economy. A clean engine also lasts longer than a dirty engine does, so if you plan to keep your automobile for years to come, make sure to change the oil regularly to keep the engine clean.
